Growing Together: Nature, Connection, and Community at S.T.E.P. by S.T.E.P., Inc.

As Mental Health Awareness Month continues, this week at S.T.E.P. by S.T.E.P., Inc. reminded us just how important connection, movement, reflection, and community truly are for our mental health and overall well-being.

On Wednesday, we spent the day at the SBS Farm & Greenhouse, and it could not have been more perfect. With 73-degree weather, bright sunshine, a gentle breeze, and blue skies filled with puffy clouds, it was exactly the kind of day that makes you slow down and appreciate the world around you. For many of us, simply getting outside of the Drop-In Center and reconnecting with nature brought a sense of peace and renewal.

While we were there, we held our weekly meditation surrounded by the sounds of birds, wildlife, rustling trees, and calming meditation music. Together, we reflected on the idea that growth is a process — not only in the greenhouse and gardens around us, but within ourselves as well.

Just like the seeds we planted, personal growth requires care and attention. During our meditation, we talked about how growth needs kindness, love, patience, nurturing, self-reflection, and time. Nothing blooms overnight. Growth takes work, and everyone grows in their own time.

After meditation, we spent time planting spinach, lettuce, radishes, rutabaga, and green and yellow beans in the greenhouse. We watered the new seeds, explored the property, enjoyed fresh air and exercise, and even had the chance to pet the horse. We also met Noah, our new gardener, and got to see many exciting updates around the farm, including the newly planted orchard and the tiny houses that have been added since our last visit.

Some of the favorite moments shared by the group included simply being together, listening to the birds, feeling the warm sun, watching the clouds drift through the sky, and having the opportunity to slow down and reflect. Nature has a powerful way of helping us reconnect — not only with ourselves, but with each other.

We are excited to return to the farm again next Thursday for more watering, meditation, and time spent connecting outdoors. Our meditation group takes place every Thursday at 11 AM, and we invite anyone in the community to come experience it with us. Whether you are looking for peace, connection, support, or simply a moment to breathe, we would love to have you join us.

This week we also visited Grace Church in Ogdensburg for their weekly Meals of Grace lunch. The group had an amazing time sharing conversation, laughter, and connection with new friends in the community. One highlight of the visit was Aaron bringing home a piece of Pastor Donna’s homemade chocolate peanut butter pie for his wife — something he was very excited about! Opportunities like these remind us how meaningful community partnerships and shared meals can be in helping people feel welcomed and connected.

We will be returning to Meals of Grace again next Wednesday, and anyone interested in joining us can stop by the Drop-In Center beforehand.

On Friday, we wrapped up the week with one of our favorite traditions — Movie & Popcorn Day. Jill won the most games this week, which meant she earned the chance to pick the movie. Her choice was Old Yeller, one of her longtime favorites, and everyone enjoyed relaxing together with popcorn and a classic film to end the week.

Looking ahead, we are excited to announce that beginning June 1st, Carrie Woodcock will begin leading two new afternoon groups that will be open to the public: Mindfulness & Meditation and Strength & Conditioning.

The Mindfulness & Meditation group will focus on self-care, reflection, support, and meaningful group discussions that help us navigate the challenges we all face in everyday life. Building strong support networks and creating intentional time for reflection can have a significant impact on improving mental health and helping people maintain independence more effectively.

The Strength & Conditioning group will focus on functional fitness — strengthening our bodies to better support the everyday activities required for independent living. Physical fitness not only improves strength, mobility, and health, but it also plays an important role in improving mood, reducing stress, and supporting positive mental health. Physical and mental wellness work hand in hand, and both are essential pieces of living a healthy and independent life.

At S.T.E.P. by S.T.E.P., Inc., our goal is to continue supporting individuals as they work hard to maintain their independence, improve their well-being, and build meaningful connections within the community.

We hope everyone has a safe, relaxing, and meaningful Memorial Day weekend, and we look forward to another week of growth, connection, and community ahead — step by step.
